Outdoor furniture producer America’s Backyards & Outdoor Living, Inc. has signed a major lease for more than 6,500 square feet of permanent showroom space at the Las Vegas Market starting in August 2015.

As part of the Casual Furnishings category launch taking place at the Summer 2015 Market in Las Vegas,  America’ Backyards joins leading casual manufacturers Agio, Hanamint, Tommy Bahama and OW Lee, who have already committed to the market with long-term leases. These new companies join the casual/outdoor manufacturers already showing at Las Vegas Market including Emerald Home Furnishings, Emerald Outdoor, Kannoa, King’s Rattan, Original Charleston Bedwing, Patio Logic, Panama Jack, Pelican Reef, Ratana Home & Floral, Skyline Design, Somers, Sunny Designs, Inc., Sunset West USA, Veneman Collections and Zuo Modern, Inc.

Luxury Beds by Phyllis Morris Among World's Largest

Six decades of creating luxury furniture in the heart of the West Hollywood Design District has earned Phyllis Morris a special place in the world of bespoke furnishings. The newest edition of Middle East based publication Luxury has cast a spotlight on the company's completely handcrafted beds that are larger than life not only in their size, but also in their luxe appointments such as draperies, swags, gold or silver leaf finishes and such amenities as lighted canopy interiors and plasma TV lifts in their foot boards.

Since the company's launch in 1953, the clientele of Hollywood A-list celebrities began to grow to eventually include royalty, international industrialists, billionaires and people of intrigue and mystery who have sought out custom-made furniture to suit their lifestyles and unique tastes. Ms. Phyllis Morris founded the company with the philosophy of making every piece by hand, one at a time and today that philosophy is carried on by Morris' daughter Jamie Adler who heads the company as its president and brand director.

"There is no request too outrageous or too unusual," says Adler from her N. Robertson Boulevard office at the company's one and only showroom in West Hollywood, "which is why so many people fly in from around the globe to request that we make their furniture." Recently, a Middle Eastern princess visited the company's showroom to check in on her Hollywood-inspired furniture destined for her palatial desert abode. Typical of the lifestyles of the rich and famous is the size of their homes, with some up to 25,000 square feet which have been filled with gold-leafed and silk-swathed furnishings from Phyllis Morris.

Clients come to the West Hollywood showroom from such countries as India, Russia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Australia and more, mainly because there is "a demand for handcrafted and handmade luxury furnishings, especially from California," notes Adler. "The allure of Los Angeles and Hollywood is as strong as it ever was," she goes on to say. "We are at the center of creative fantasies that are reflected in films, television shows, street fashion and the free and uninhibited lifestyles that people from abroad associate with life in California."

And the price of those fantasies -- be it a Rolls Royce, a diamond-encrusted watch, a yacht, a polo pony or a $100,000 bed -- comes with the territory of living a larger-than-life lifestyle. "Our clients know exactly what they want and we can create it for them," says Adler, "which explains why we have been a global source for so many decades. With so many U.S. furniture companies outsourcing their goods, we can proudly say that our furniture is made by hand here in Los Angeles. Some of our craftspeople are second generation with our company, which makes it all the more special."

The recent article in Luxury magazine (based in Jordan) points out that creating such furniture as the $100,000 De Medici Canopy Bed takes time -- even in today's world of instant gratification. The master carvers at Phyllis Morris are constantly busy, as there is never a "slow" season for luxury furniture as Adler is quick to point out. "Our typical lead time is about 12 weeks -- but then, that is about the same lead time when ordering a custom Rolls Royce. And we often share the same clientele."

Herman Miller Partners With Unbranded Designs

Herman Miller, a global leader in design, is partnering with Unbranded Designs to discover new design talent and identify commercially viable designs.

“At Herman Miller we believe that there are talented designers all over the world capable of delivering inspiring solutions to challenging problems. With Unbranded Designs’ platform, we have an exciting and new way to connect with this talent and share our core values around design,” said Gary Smith, Vice President, Product Design and Exploration at Herman Miller.

Using Unbranded Designs' online platform and process, Herman Miller will issue an open design challenge to Unbranded’s global design community in mid-September. Submissions will go through a review process including open feedback from the broader design community as well as a juried panel of design experts. Designers will have an opportunity to make revisions based on the feedback, and then the panel will select the winner. Development at Herman Miller will begin shortly thereafter.

“What sets this partnership apart from typical design competitions is that Herman Miller is focused on finding the next great commercially viable product design. This is not a 'fun competition' for ideas; it is a process and opportunity that focuses on the commercial potential of the best ideas, which in turn leads to fantastic opportunities for designers and innovative products for Herman Miller,” said Sameer Dohadwala, co-founder, Unbranded Designs.

Winning designers will receive cash, royalties, and their name publicly displayed in marketing and collateral, in association with any commercialized products based on their designs. Non-winning finalists will receive prizes, recognition throughout the process, and feedback from a world-class juried panel of design experts, to ensure that they still find value in the opportunity. Designers retain 100 percent ownership of their designs if Herman Miller chooses not to move forward with formal development of their work.

The challenge will be launched in mid-September on the Unbranded Designs website. At that time, further details will be released on the problem statement, legal terms and conditions, and other pertinent information.

North American furniture industry Anticipates Growing Investments

Investment activity has become much brisker in the North American furniture industry over the past few months after a lull lasting several years. Upholstered furniture producers had launched the first major projects last year. Manufacturers of cabinets, living room and bedroom furniture, wardrobes and ready-to-assemble furniture are now also investing more in new machinery and plants.

This upturn in investment interest also encouraged a much larger number of people to attend the International Woodworking Fair (IWF), which took place in Atlanta, Georgia from 20 to 23 August 2014. European woodworking machinery producers setting up stands at the fair had experienced rising order intake from the North American furniture industry over the past few months. This trend looks set to intensify in the remainder of this year.

Glunz & Jensen introduces UV LED lamp technology with 60 % energy power savings

In May 2013, Glunz & Jensen A/S acquired an initial 16.8 % stake in Othonia Curing Technology A/S (Othonia). Othonia develops an innovative computer-controlled UV LED concept for curing surfaces which is replacing the original mercury lamp technology.

UV LED lamp offers instant on/off technology, removing the need for warm-up time. The lamp also offers an extreme accurate and flexible wave-length operation.

The biggest advantage of using UV LED lamp technology is the 60% energy power savings along with complete removal of mercury disposal, ozone and heat emission – a very environmentally friendly solution.

LED technology provides many opportunities for the use of UV LED in different industries. Glunz & Jensen has chosen to exploit the following three areas:

•    Glunz & Jensen will incorporate the UV LED technology in their current exposure products for the flexo prepress industry, where it can benefit the production of flexographic plates, making it more environmentally friendly and cost effective. Glunz & Jensen brings to the market a generic product that can be tailor made for OEM partners.

The initial field tests show very promising results and Glunz & Jensen plan to launch the first commercial product in the first quarter of 2015.

•    UV LED technology can be used in connection with the drying modules of printing units for offset, flexo, as well as digital printing machines. With the exact wave-length of the UV LED, it perfectly dries with significantly reduced energy consumption in the printing press. The LED light source exposes the material with a very little amount of heat, which makes it ideal for curing thermal sensitive substrates as foil, paper cardboard and aluminium.

Glunz & Jensen is in close dialogue with printing press manufacturers and has performed an initial concept evaluation, showing very promising results.

•    The new UV LED technology will also be used for curing surfaces in other applications, such as paint and lacquer in the furniture industry. The LED and the UVC lamp units expose the material with a very little amount of heat, which makes it ideal for curing thermal sensitive substrates as wood and electronics.

Initial testing during the last quarter proves a strong concept and Glunz & Jensen is currently designing a field test module for the evaluation in a real production environment. The first field test unit is expected to be installed at a Danish customer site in October 2014.

Moving forward, Glunz & Jensen and Othonia will cooperate on the development and commercialisation of the technology. Othonia’s products will be marketed by Glunz & Jensen.

AHFA Supplier Members to Be Named 'Solution Partners'

Supplier members of the American Home Furnishings Alliance will now be known as "Solution Partners." The new name is part of a rebranding and revitalization of the group, which has been an integral component of AHFA for 50 years.

AHFA's Suppliers Division was organized in 1964 to incorporate suppliers of products and services into the mission of the association. Over the years, the diverse membership of this division has played an essential role in providing needed information and expertise to the manufacturer members of the AHFA.
Original division members were manufacturers of equipment and machinery; suppliers of component parts, materials and supplies; packaging, transportation and warehousing products, services and support; and domestic and international logistics companies. These members continue to be an integral part of the division.

In recent years, membership has expanded as the industry has changed. Now the membership base also includes financial institutions, technology companies, marketing and public relations agencies, insurance brokers and underwriters, law firms, social and digital media advisors, internet sales support, and waste disposal and environmental services.

In 2000, the division began a Scholarship Golf Tournament, which now funds six annual scholarships of $2,000 each awarded to the children of regular, full-time employees of AHFA member companies. The one-year scholarships are presented based on financial need and academic merit of the student. The program is open to both manufacturer and supplier members of the Alliance, and it has presented 46 scholarships since its inception in 2000.

Surya to Build One Million Square Foot Facility

Surya broke ground on its new one million square foot warehouse and office headquarters in Cartersville, Ga. Attendees at the groundbreaking ceremony included Surya Founder Surya Tiwari, Surya President Satya Tiwari, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, Bartow County Commissioner Steve Taylor and Consul General of India Ajit Kumar, along with Surya employees and members of the Cartersville-Bartow County Department of Economic Development. Work at the building site was scheduled to start today, and the facility is expected to be completed by August 2015 with a target move in date of late 2015.

“To optimally serve our customers, we need to not only have the best infrastructure possible for our warehousing operations and logistics but also a central location where our sales and marketing, design, creative, customer service and other teams can easily collaborate,” said Satya Tiwari, president. “Our location is ideal because we are able to support economic development in the community by bringing new jobs to the area while making our company more attractive to Atlanta talent due to the shorter commute time. This expansion is beneficial on many levels and we look forward to what the future will bring as we execute on our goal to become a $1 billion company within the next ten years.”

The new facility is located 15 minutes south of Surya’s current U.S. headquarters in Calhoun, Ga., which will continue to be used for warehousing some of the company’s more than 30,000 products.

Overall Market pre-registrations were running 7% ahead of Winter 2014 and 32% ahead of Summer 2013.The ongoing expansion of better resources in permanent showrooms and temporary exhibits also has fueled record growth in designer pre-registrations, which surpassed last summer by 133%.  Additionally, overall pre-registration growth in key target regions – with 33% gains from the TOLA region (Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas), 20% gains from the Midwest and 18% gains from the West – foretells expected overall increases in market attendance from these areas.

Maricich summed up the positive opening day atmosphere, saying, “We’re creating a compelling environment to make buyers come.  We’ve increased the quantity of resources and we’ve enriched the quality of resources, and the industry has responded.”

Phase Three of Strategic Growth Plan of Las Vegas Market Unveiled

Las Vegas Market announced that phase three of its strategic growth plan to position itself as the leading buying platform for furniture, home decor and gift in the western United States will be implemented at the Summer 2015 Market, scheduled for Sunday, August 2, to Thursday, August 6, 2015. Highlights of the phase three transformation include the launch of two new showroom floors in Building C—C5 for boutique home décor, textiles and accessories, and C11, for gourmet housewares, tabletop and gift—and the relocation of temporary exhibits from those floors to a dedicated, free-standing venue on the Market campus.

“The strategic enhancements planned for Summer 2015 represent the culmination of a three-year realignment and re-imagining of Las Vegas Market to offer an unparalleled presentation of furniture, gift and home décor in the western United States,” said Dorothy Belshaw, president of Gift & Home Décor, International Market Centers. “By offering an enriched presentation of better goods, remerchandising existing resources and launching new categories, Las Vegas Market has created a compelling, multi-dimensional platform designed to appeal to today’s cross-category buyers and suppliers.”

New permanent showrooms on C5 will feature some 90 high-end home décor, home textiles, and accessories showrooms. “The revamped C5 will offer a concentration of high-end home textiles at Las Vegas Market, and the custom showroom spaces will allow specialty suppliers to transition from temporary presentations to permanent showrooms and maximize their return,” Belshaw noted. “The focus will be on resources that are innovative, design-driven and artisanal with special attention to form and function, process and provenance.”

In line with these new introductions, temporary exhibits previously housed on C5 and C11 will be relocated and expanded into the Pavilions, existing permanent tent structures on the Las Vegas Market campus. As part of this relocation, the temporary exhibits will be divided into two categories: approximately 70,000 square feet of space will be devoted to order-writing resources; the other location will feature “cash-and-carry” products designed for immediate delivery, including an expanded presentation of the existing VINTAGE, CARRY and GLOBAL categories, and the addition of a new offering of antique and one-of-a-kind merchandise.

The 2015 Summer Market is expected to expand to feature some 100,000 net square feet of gift and home décor temporary exhibits, in addition to 34,500 square feet of temporary furniture exhibits which will continue to be presented on B2.

These changes, planned for July 2015, represent the final phase of the Las Vegas Market’s strategic evolution into the most comprehensive buying platform for buyers in the western United States. The three-phase plan, which began in 2013, includes the introduction of new product categories such as specialty tabletop, home textiles and lifestyle collections, fashion accessories and artisanal crafts, as well as growth of existing categories and re-merchandised presentations.  Since 2013, Las Vegas Market has experienced dramatic growth in the furniture, home décor and gift product categories, with 850,000 square feet of new and expanded showrooms and more than 2,200 new lines. Overall registration for Summer 2014 Las Vegas Market is tracking 32% ahead of Summer 2013.
