Head up for Fresh Wood competition at AWFS 2013

The full-scale international AWFS Fair, to be held from July 24 – 27, 2013 in Las Vegas, has become a hub for international commerce in the woodworking industry. The AWFS Fair collectively brings the entire home and commercial furnishings industry, including manufacturers and distributors of machinery, hardware, lumber, construction materials and other suppliers to the furniture, cabinet manufacturers and custom woodworkers.

Fresh Wood is a student woodworking competition which is a part of AWFS Fair and is open to full-time students in an accredited high school or post-secondary woodworking or related program and part-time students in an accredited post-secondary woodworking or related program who are transitioning into a career in woodworking or design within North America. The competition has six categories at both school levels: case goods, chairs, open production/contract, reproduction and tables.

Five notable woodworking and furniture industry professionals have been chosen for AWFS 2013 Fresh Wood student woodworking competition this year. The jury consists of Janis Colella, owner at Culin & Colella high-end custom architectural woodwork and furniture, Paul Epp, Industrial Design Department Chair at Ontario College of Art & Design, Darrell Peart, of Darrell Peart Furniture Maker and specialist in Greene & Greene style furniture, Gene Valcke, Regional Manager at Hanes Fabrics Co. and AWFS Board Director Rob Zoehfeld, Product Line Manager at Datesweiser custom office and corporate furniture.

The judges are to begin their work in May, with a round of preface judging and then come together at the AWFS Fair in Las Vegas to select the winners.
